Cross-campus transfer students are students who are currently enrolled in another school or college at UW-Madison who wish to transfer into the College of Engineering.
Eligibility
Students must meet a set of minimum requirements, outlined below, to be considered for admission to a degree program in the College of Engineering. Admission is competitive and dependent on program capacity. The admissions committee considers applicants’ grades and grade trends, academic rigor, and personal statement. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to an engineering degree program.
Next Steps
Cross-campus students interested in applying to an engineering degree program should first review the eligibility requirements below and then complete the College of Engineering Informational Tutorial in Canvas.
Requirements and Resources

Eligibility Requirements
- Students not currently in the College of Engineering may apply a maximum of two times to the College of Engineering. Applications for Fall 2020 and Fall 2021 (submitted at the end of the Spring 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters) will not count toward the maximum of two application attempts.
- Students who have earned more than 80 credits at the time of application are not eligible to apply for transfer admission to the College of Engineering. These 80 credits include:
- All credits completed at the time of application, including UW-Madison credits and transferable credits from other colleges and universities.
- These 80 credits do not include:
- In-progress credits (at the time of application)
- Retroactive foreign language credits
- Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP) credits
- GCE Advanced Level (A-Level) credits
- UW-Madison calculus credits awarded by examination
- Credits from Community College of the Air Force or from Military Service Schools awarded on a Joint Services Transcript
- Credits earned in the Spring 2020 semester
- The credit limit does not apply to candidates at other institutions who are in transfer agreement programs with the College of Engineering. The credit limit does apply to individuals who have completed a bachelor’s degree.
- The Minimum Admission Requirements for Cross-Campus Students outlines the minimum requirements for admission consideration to a degree program in the College of Engineering (CoE). Admission is competitive and dependent on program capacity. The admissions committee considers applicants’ grades/grade trends, academic rigor, and personal statement. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to a CoE degree program. Most competitive applications will show academic rigor typical of engineering curricula.
- Cross-campus applicants must carefully select an engineering program they intend to pursue through graduation. Interdepartmental transfer within the College of Engineering is competitive and dependent on multiple factors, including program capacity.
- Due to high student demand, several CoE majors have been especially selective and competitive in recent semesters: biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, computer engineering and mechanical engineering.
Advising Resources
Students are eligible and encouraged to meet with an engineering academic advisor after completing the Canvas course. Instructions for making an advising appointment are in the last module of the Canvas course, where students will be asked to submit a survey with their availability. Advisors help students evaluate program options, review requirements and select courses that will meet those requirements, and decide when to apply.
Students can email coeadvising@engr.wisc.edu with questions and may also seek advising through the Cross-College Advising Service (CCAS).
Join the cross-campus email group for timely information and updates.
How to apply:
The College of Engineering currently has two application periods – one for fall semester and one for spring semester. If you have satisfied all the requirements as outlined above, you can apply by submitting the Application to Transfer into a Degree-granting Engineering Program (TIED).
