Engineering construction update

Dear faculty, staff and students:

Although summer is slightly more than half over, we already are anticipating the excitement of the new academic year.

The fall 2024 semester will be even more exciting as several multi-year construction projects will be well underway. The first of those is a major utility infrastructure upgrade, which will affect several sites throughout the engineering campus.

It will begin this week (July 15), when crews will fence construction areas and move in heavy equipment. Site excavation (weather-permitting) is scheduled to begin the week of July 22, when crews will start working in the courtyard bounded by the Mechanical Engineering Building, Engineering Research Building, and Materials Science and Engineering Building.

During this period of change, please remain aware of what’s happening around you. Obey signs, follow designated pedestrian and vehicular routes, take a deep breath during delays, and respect the staff and workers who are trying to keep you—and their crews—safe on our campus.

Most of all—as this project continues, demolition of 1410 Engineering Drive occurs, preparations for our new engineering building begin, and a major UW Athletics project kicks off adjacent to our campus—I ask for your flexibility and patience.

For an extended period of time, we’ll have front-row seats to some exciting, relevant construction activities—the outcome of which on our campus is an incredible, modern engineering building that will help meet your needs for decades to come.

With appreciation for your cooperation,

Dean Ian Robertson
